The Occasion
Celebrating 5 years of excellence at The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) with its world-class academic and laboratory facilities and its leading research institutions. Driven by a vision of the King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia to revive Dar Al Hikmah, the intellectual center of the Islamic Golden Age, KAUST opened its doors in 2009 attracting leading researchers from around the world.
The Transformation
Studio Mr.White and Minus5 Architects were contacted to create the centerpiece show for its 6000 people community during the festival.After going over the client’s brief and event location we suggested to transform what would have been a usual 3D mapping show into a more appropriate Holographic experience taking advantage of the serene campus bay and its futuristic light house.The beacon of light became our inspiration and through it we conjured the glorious past in the form of ephemeral imagery, lights and colors depicted the scientists of old feeding the flame of knowledge. The flame reignited today with the mission of the university and its accomplishments and it crowned the event with a synchronized massive light and laser show at the end.
The Result
An ephemeral projection over a massive 30m wide x15m high water screen floating in the harbor of the university.
Detailed design concepts were developed and discussed thoroughly with the KAUST event organization team to create a visual content that reflects accurately the original vision of the university, its present and its ambitions for the future.
Pushing the envelope even further, the water show would be synchronized with a lighting and laser show on the KAUST beacon, the 57m high emblem of the university.
The result was a visual voyage from the glorious past of the House of Wisdom passing on the torch of scientific excellence to KAUST.
